This section of our website is offered to provide some insight into running a small winery in a small community in Western Colorado.

Surface Creek Winery & Vineyards, LLC is owned by Jim & Jeanne Durr.  We are both mostly-recovered lawyers who left the Front Range of Colorado (Fort Collins) in 1997 after contemplating Wyoming, Montana, and British Columbia as locations for our new home.

There are two other personages that are part of our operation that stated in 1999.  Nick is our 21 year old college student son.  He is taller, better-looking and smarter than me, but for the time being I have the advantage of age and experience in matters that do not require a youthful, good-looking, fit body.  The second important person is our dog Boomer.   We will develop his own web page and you will discover that he too is smarter and better looking than me.  But I am taller.

We live in an old stone farm house which records say was built in 1896 – 15 years after the Ute Indians were run out of the area.  Our winery is located there.  Our wine tasting room and art gallery is located in an old stone Oddfellows Hall built in 1927 in Eckert on Highway 65 – one-half mile from our home.

My essays about our experience reflect my own experiences.  Other wineries on the Western Slope of Colorado have done it differently . . . it seems that each winery has started in a different way.  We were one of the more under-capitalized wineries.  (The exterior of several wineries cost way more than did our entire operation.)

The essays are subject to change from time to time.  This is not a blog because I am too busy, too lazy to keep up a constant chatter of observations of what’s going on around here.  But I’ll do my best to keep current, and when I write I hope it will not waste your time.
